Tilcon's Partnership with the
Wildlife Habitat Council
In 2005, The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) approached Tilcon about restoring and enhancing the wildlife around its Colchester site located on Rte. 149, along the Airline Trail and the Jeremy River, a feeder stream of the Salmon River.

Tilcon Connecticut Concrete Reclaimer
Tilcon’s concrete reclaimer is used to reclaim the concrete that has not been used at the jobsite. The reclaiming process offers substantial environmental benefits including the ability to recycle and reuse stone and sand, along with fresh water savings and processed wash water management control.

Tilcon Connecticut Asphalt Plant
Tilcon’s new energy efficient and environmentally-friendly hot mix asphalt (HMA) plant that includes a lower emission burner, enhanced noise controls, and a vapor recovery system.

Tilcon prides itself on being a good corporate citizen, and we are proud that our proposal incorporates a variety of environmental benefits.

Tilcon currently owns approximately 535 contiguous acres of land south of Woodford Avenue and Black Rock Avenue.

As part of the expansion plan, Tilcon will donate more than 275 acres of company- owned land as open space to the City of New Britain, Town of Plainville and Town of Southington. The donation of this land will prevent any future development and will result in a major increase in the amount of protected open space and Class I and Class II watershed acreage in the region. In fact, for every acre of mineral rights sold to Tilcon, the company will donate nearly three acres of open space.  This potential 3 for 1 exchange represents a unique opportunity for New Britain, Southington and Plainville to substantially expand their open space land.

Proposed Open Space and Watershed Donations:

  • The City of New Britain will receive approximately 95 acres of land for reservoir development, open space and/or watershed.
  • The Town of Plainville will receive approximately 157 acres of land for open space.
  • The Town of Southington will receive approximately 75 acres of land for open space and/or watershed.

Tilcon is proud of its significant operational investments that benefit our neighbors and the local environment. Below are some of these investments.

  • At its Plainville Quarry, Tilcon has installed an energy efficient and environmentally-friendly hot mix asphalt (HMA) plant that includes a lower emission burner, enhanced noise controls, and a vapor recovery system. As an active participant in Connecticut Light and Power and the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund’s (CEEF) energy-efficiency programs, Tilcon was recently presented with a monetary incentive from CL&P and the CEEF for installing a single hot-mix asphalt drum plant, as opposed to traditional equipment.  This incentive will save almost 694,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
  • In 2005, Tilcon installed a dust suppression system at its quarry in Plainville. This system significantly reduces fugitive dust at processing transfer points helping Tilcon maintain a safer, healthier workplace for employees. The system also regulates the amount of water being used so that Tilcon makes the most efficient use of this precious natural resource.  Use of this water resource is controlled under a very restrictive Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Water Diversion Permit.
  • For 2008, Tilcon has committed an additional $1 million for dust control at its Plainville/New Britain site.
  • Tilcon recycles used asphalt pavement by processing it, and returning it to new mix for all paving projects.  This recycled asphalt pavement not only complies with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s bulky waste reduction goals but it also helps conserves landfill space and saves precious natural resources.
  • Tilcon has installed a concrete reclaim system at the Plainville concrete facility. The concrete reclaimer is used to reclaim the concrete that has not been used at the jobsite. The reclaiming process offers substantial environmental benefits including the ability to recycle and reuse stone and sand, along with fresh water savings and processed wash water management control.
  • In October of 2007, Tilcon hired blasting consultants to conduct a seismic monitoring program which documented the seismic impact that blasting at the Plainville Quarry had on houses surrounding the Plainville Quarry.  From this study, the blasting consultants determined that the level of impact is well below established standards for preventing damage and in many cases the impact of blasting at the Plainville Quarry is below the impact of typical daily household activities.
